theScore Bet review

7.7out of 10

For recreational and parlay bettors who want a well-rated app and a second-chance first bet. Price-sensitive straight bettors and consistent winners should compare prices elsewhere first.

theScore Bet is PENN Entertainment’s state-licensed US sportsbook. It was called ESPN BET until 2025-12-01, when PENN and ESPN ended their deal early, and PENN said it was live in 21 US jurisdictions that day.[2][1][3]

Main lines are reported at the standard −110, and PENN describes its bettors as mass-market and parlay-heavy. The book publishes no US withdrawal schedule; review sites say up to 72 hours to process, then 1–3 business days.[68][71][29][14]

PENN told Massachusetts regulators it may limit patrons, and on 2026-10-06 Ontario’s regulator issued a C$200,000 penalty over cash-out offers in theScore Bet’s app that it found misleading (open to appeal).[54][23]

Best for

  • Parlay and same-game parlay bettors: Parlay+ builds same-game parlays (reported up to 10 legs), with pre-built parlays in a “Parlay Lounge” and a Parlay Club reward.[44][38][47][49]
  • Users of theScore media app: linking the two (FUSE) lets you start a slip in the media app, finish it in the bet app and track bets across both.[40]
  • New customers who want a second-chance first bet: up to $1,000 back in bonus bets if it loses, with a $10 minimum deposit.[49][13]
  • iPhone users who want a well-rated app: 4.8 on the US App Store from about 223,000 ratings, most of them given under the ESPN BET name.[32]

Skip it if

  • You bet main lines and care about price. Example prices: at −110 a $100 bet at a coin flip costs $4.55; at −105 elsewhere it costs $2.38, $1,082.25 less over 500 bets.[68][calc]
  • You win consistently. PENN told Massachusetts regulators it may limit patrons, with limits set as a percentage of normal limits.[54][55]
  • You want the deepest live-betting menu: Oddschecker calls its live betting less deep than FanDuel’s or DraftKings’, and Covers lists a limited range of sports and markets.[45][14]
  • You need a published payout time before you deposit: theScore Bet publishes no US withdrawal times.[27]

How vigged scores it

7.7/10
  • Pricing 25%7.0

The only source on main lines reports the standard −110, and no source reports reduced juice. PENN describes its bettors as parlay-heavy, where the margin compounds per leg. That is the 7 (typical) anchor.[68][71][70][calc]

  • Markets 15%8.0

Major US sports with props, Parlay+ same-game parlays, alternate lines, teasers, live betting, futures and cash out. Review sites call the live menu less deep than FanDuel’s or DraftKings’ and the range of sports limited, which keeps it under the 8.5 anchor.[36][44][43][34][45][14]

  • Limits 15%7.0

Typical US retail: PENN told Massachusetts regulators it may limit patrons for reasons including taking advantage of the sportsbook, and publishes no maximum bet. No per-operator limiting figures and no voids were found.[54][55][37]

  • Payouts 15%7.5

The book states $10 PayPal and debit deposits with no theScore fee, but publishes no US withdrawal times. Review sites describe up to 72 hours to process and 1–3 business days to arrive, between the 7 and 8.5 anchors.[25][26][29][14]

  • App & site 10%8.5

iOS 4.8 from about 223K ratings and Google Play 4.4 from about 19.9K, with streaming, cash out and web betting: the 8.5 anchor. User reviews mention withdrawal checks, slow support and wrongly graded bets, and the Android rating is lower, so it sits half a point below FanDuel and Hard Rock Bet.[32][34][33][42]

  • Promos 5%7.5

An ordinary second-chance offer: up to $1,000 back in bonus bets, reported as five bonus bets that expire after 7 days and return no stake. No minimum-odds rule was found, which helps a little.[49][13][52][53][calc]

  • Safety & licensing 15%9.0

US state licenses, a Nasdaq-listed owner and a full set of limit and self-exclusion tools. Fines in Massachusetts and Ohio, and Ontario penalties of C$105,000 (an alleged failure to intervene with a high-risk player) and C$200,000 (over cash-out offers the AGCO found misleading, 2026-10-06, open to appeal) make the record mixed, between the 8.5 and 10 anchors, level with DraftKings and FanDuel.[11][4][62][17][19][18][21][22][23]

Weighted mean of seven scores, each 0–10 against the same published anchors for every book. Tap a row for the reason. How the rubric works.

Launched
theScore Bet first launched in New Jersey in September 2019 and left the US in July 2022, when PENN led with Barstool Sportsbook. PENN’s US book became ESPN BET on 2023-11-14 and theScore Bet on 2025-12-01[6][7][8][3]

Fees
No theScore fee on PayPal or debit deposits; in Illinois no per-bet fee and a $1 minimum bet (Action Network, 2026)[25][26][30]

Pricing: standard −110, parlay-heavy customers

theScore Bet publishes no juice schedule. One undated comparison, about ESPN BET, puts its main lines at the standard −110, the same as DraftKings. No source reports reduced juice. PENN built its own risk and trading platform, first used by theScore Bet in Ontario in July 2022 in place of a third-party engine.[68][66][67]

Example prices At −110 on both sides the overround is 4.76%: you need 52.38% to break even, and a $100 bet at a coin flip costs $4.55 on average, $2,272.73 over 500 bets. A −105 price elsewhere pays $95.24 instead of $90.91 on a win: $2.16 a bet, $1,082.25 over 500.[calc]

PENN slides reproduced in a 2025 activist-shareholder filing say its gross hold has run below the median of FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, BetRivers and Fanatics; the filer is partisan. Single-month state figures: about 9.4% in Michigan (February 2025, $1.7M on $18M handle, vigged’s division) and 9.8% in Indiana (November 2025). Hold mixes parlays, props and results, so it is not the margin on a −110 side.[69][72][73]

PENN says its bettors lean on parlays: 27% of handle in Q2–Q3 2024 and 28.3% in September 2024. Example prices: two −110 legs pay +264.46 against +300 at the no-vig price, a cost of $8.88 per $100 if each leg is a true 50%. Four legs pay +1228.33 against +1500, $16.98 per $100. Same-game parlays are priced for correlation, and no SGP margin is published.[70][71][calc]

Teasers are offered, but no teaser price table or push rule was found. Example prices: if a 2-team 6-point teaser paid −120, each leg would need to win 73.85%; check the price on the slip first. Buying from +3 to +3.5 in the NFL is worth up to about −118.5 at a no-vig price; from +5 to +5.5, only about −104.9. theScore Bet publishes no buy-point prices.[34][38][74][calc]

Illinois charges books a per-wager tax. Action Network (2026) lists theScore Bet as passing no per-bet fee to bettors, with a $1 minimum bet. One App Store user reported a fee added by an April 2026 update and removed a day later; that is a single, unverified review.[30][31][32]

Example prices What the price costs over 500 bets

theScore Bet's typical price (−110)

  • −110$2,273
  • −108$1,852
  • −105$1,190
  • −104$962

Expected cost of 500 bets of $100, each a true 50/50, at each price on both sides (vigged's calculator). theScore Bet: −110, reported on main lines.[68][calc]

Markets: the usual menu, built around parlays

The book’s sport pages list moneylines, spreads (run line and puck line), totals, period and inning bets, player props, parlays, same-game parlays, live betting and futures.[36]

Same-game parlays are called Parlay+, marked “P+” on events. The App Store listing describes custom parlays from same-game to cross-sport, and the Google Play listing adds teasers. Gambling.com reports up to 10 legs and a “Parlay Lounge” of pre-built parlays.[44][32][34][47]

Alt lines: an official guide covers “Move the Line”, which Gambling.com describes as a slider on the market. SportsHandle praises the alternate lines on player props and calls it “not the deepest book”.[43][47][46]

Depth is the gap. Oddschecker calls its live betting less deep than FanDuel’s or DraftKings’, and Covers lists a limited range of sports and markets. Covers also lists no live streaming, while the App Store listing says funded accounts can stream, with blackouts. Oddschecker and Covers are affiliate review sites.[45][14][32]

Cash out settles a bet early and is not offered on every bet. Oddschecker reports full and partial cash out from the My Bets tab, and no source shows an edit-bet feature.[37][39][45]

Limits: PENN says it may limit

No maximum bet is published. The help center says bet limits are set by the oddsmakers at their discretion.[37]

In a 2024 written reply to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, PENN said it “may limit a patron for various reasons, including taking advantage of or manipulating the sportsbook or abusing promotional play”, and that patron limits are set as a percentage of normal limits. It declined to attend the commission’s May 2024 roundtable, as did DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics, Caesars and BetMGM.[54][55]

Across Massachusetts operators, 0.64% of bettors were limited (September 2025), and consistent winners were more likely to be. No PENN-only figure was published. Since 2026-06-01 a Massachusetts rule requires books to tell a limited bettor, explain why and name the markets affected.[56][57][58][59]

Anecdotes only: a newsletter quotes a Chicago bettor saying ESPN Bet, BetMGM and Caesars cut his $100 bets to as little as $0.50, and one App Store review reports maximum winnings of $5 after a win. Neither is dated or verified.[60][33]

Payouts: no US schedule published

Deposits by PayPal or debit card start at $10 with no theScore fee. PayPal must be funded from a balance or bank, not a card; the first deposit links that PayPal account for good, and withdrawals go back to it only after a successful deposit. Debit-card withdrawals open after a card deposit, though the issuing bank may block them.[25][26]

The help center lists withdrawal articles for debit card, Instant Bank Transfer, bank EFT and Venmo, but publishes no US timings. The only published timing is Canadian: Interac withdrawals pass a 24-hour review, then usually arrive within about an hour.[27][28]

Review sites disagree. Covers headlines “within 24 hours” but elsewhere says up to 72 hours for approval, and its FAQ says 3 banking days plus up to 3 more for bank transfers. BettingUSA says requests are processed within 72 hours and most arrive in 1–3 business days, with online banking at $10 to $50,000 a transaction and no theScore withdrawal fees.[14][29]

App Store reviews mention ID checks at withdrawal, such as a selfie with the debit card or a bank statement, and Gambling.com reports occasional withdrawal issues. No press report of payout delays was found. Requesting a small first withdrawal early can bring any verification step forward, before you need the money.[33][47]

App: high iOS rating, earned under the ESPN name

The US iOS app shows 4.8 from about 223K ratings and needs iOS 17 or later. Most ratings were given while it was ESPN BET. On Google Play it is still package com.espn.bet: 4.4 from about 19.9K reviews and 1M+ downloads. RotoWire (September 2026) gives 4.7 and 4.2.[32][34][35]

The 2025-12-01 rebrand was an app update. Accounts, balances, open bets and responsible-gaming settings carried over, and only the icon and color changed. No press report of an outage was found then or since. PENN’s CEO said of the 2023 switch from Barstool: “We were down for several days.”[1][3][76]

Published features: live streaming for funded accounts, with blackouts (the listing claims 150,000+ events), Profit Boosts, cash out, and FUSE, which links theScore media app for cross-app bet tracking and score and news alerts. Web betting runs at sportsbook.thescore.bet with the GeoComply plug-in for location checks.[32][40][42][41]

Written App Store reviews, many from before the rebrand, mention withdrawal and ID friction, slow support, bets graded wrongly and open bets not loading; others praise a clean interface. To check for yourself, sort by Most Recent and skip reviews from before 2025-12-01.[33]

History: in September 2023 some Barstool Sportsbook and theScore Bet accounts were suspended after live NFL props failed to update, which Barstool put down to a system update.[77]

Promos: a $1,000 reset, paid in bonus bets

The book’s promotions page shows a “$1,000 First Bet Reset, Paid in Bonus Bets”: if your first bet loses, the stake comes back in bonus bets up to $1,000, after a $10 minimum deposit. Former ESPN BET customers are not eligible, per RotoWire.[49][13][50]

Fox Sports (August 2026) says the refund arrives as five bonus bets of 20% each. They are credited within 72 hours and expire after 7 days. The help center says bonus bets cannot be redeemed for cash, are for sports only and are used one at a time.[13][52][53]

Example prices A $1,000 first bet that loses returns five $200 bonus bets. If a winning bonus bet pays only the profit, as is standard, each is worth about $90.91 on a −110 coin flip, so the set is worth about $454.55, under half its face value.[calc]

In Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia an alternate offer gives $100 in bonus bets for a $10 bet; sources disagree on whether that bet must win. Ongoing promos seen around May 2026: Profit Boosts, parlay insurance, an NFL “Early Victory” offer and a Parlay Club bonus bet of $10 after four $10+ parlays of 4+ legs.[51][52][49]

Safety and licensing

theScore Bet is licensed by each state regulator where it operates and owned by PENN Entertainment, listed on Nasdaq, which bought theScore in 2021. In Missouri it runs on a temporary license through PENN’s two casinos there.[11][4][10]

US fines: Massachusetts $10,000 (approved January 2025) for 249 bets on games involving non-Division I teams; $25,000 over a Barstool parlay promotion from March 2023; and $15,000 (reported October 2025) over an ESPN anchor describing a bet on air as an investment carrying no risk. Ohio fined PENN $250,000 in 2023 over a Barstool show on a college campus.[17][19][20][18][21]

Ontario: the AGCO issued C$105,000 in penalties in October 2025 for an alleged failure to intervene with a high-risk player who lost about C$230,000. On 2026-10-06 it issued a C$200,000 penalty, reported as the maximum for a single breach, after the app showed cash-out offers of about C$380,000 and about C$100,000 on a C$1,000 parlay; both were rejected at automated verification and the bet settled as a loss. The operator has 15 days to appeal to Ontario's tribunal, so the penalty may still be contested.[22][23][24]

Tools listed by theScore: daily time, deposit, spend, loss and single-wager limits, cool-off, self-exclusion and reality checks (that list may be Ontario-oriented). The book links state self-exclusion programs and helplines. vigged.com is for readers 21+; help: 1-800-GAMBLER.[62][63]

Support: in-app live chat, [email protected], and a phone line for Pennsylvania and Massachusetts residents. No hours are published. Gambling.com says chat starts with a bot and rates support 5.75 out of 10.[61][48]

PENN’s focus has moved to online casino. It is putting its marketing into online-casino states, cut more than 75 jobs at theScore in June 2025, and cited “customer-friendly online sportsbook outcomes and lower volumes” in its Q2 2026 results.[64][65]

How it compares

On main lines, one comparison site puts theScore Bet (as ESPN BET) and DraftKings both at −110. Example prices: against a −105 price elsewhere that is $90.91 instead of $95.24 on a $100 win, $1,082.25 over 500 bets.[68][calc]

On menu depth, review sites rank it behind FanDuel and DraftKings for live betting. Its edge is the link to theScore media app and Parlay+.[45][40][44]

Example prices Kalshi’s taker fee on a 50¢ contract works out to about −107.25 a side, against theScore Bet’s −110, before the bid/ask spread. Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange, not a sportsbook: you trade contracts against other traders.[75][calc]

PENN’s handle share was about 3.7% at the end of 2024, per an activist shareholder’s filing, and PENN calls its bettors mass-market. Same bet, better number: compare before you bet.[69][71]

Pros

  • State-licensed, with a Nasdaq-listed owner, PENN Entertainment.[11][4]
  • iOS 4.8 from about 223K ratings, with streaming for funded accounts, cash out and web betting.[32][42]
  • $10 minimum deposit by PayPal or debit card, with no theScore fee.[25][26]
  • Parlay+ same-game parlays, alternate lines through Move the Line, and teasers.[44][43][34]
  • The ESPN BET to theScore Bet switch kept accounts, balances and open bets; no press report of an outage was found.[1][3]
  • No per-bet fee passed on in Illinois, per Action Network (2026).[30]

Cons

  • Standard −110 main lines: $4.55 per $100 at a coin flip, against $2.38 at −105 (example prices).[68][calc]
  • Parlays compound the margin: four −110 legs cost $16.98 per $100 (example prices), and PENN’s bettors lean on parlays.[70][calc]
  • No US withdrawal times on the book’s own pages; review sites say up to 72 hours to process.[27][29]
  • May limit patrons, by PENN’s own account to Massachusetts regulators.[54]
  • Fines in Massachusetts, Ohio (2023, under the Barstool Sportsbook brand) and Ontario, including C$200,000 over cash-out offers the AGCO found misleading (2026-10-06, open to appeal).[17][21][23]
  • Live betting reported less deep than FanDuel’s or DraftKings’.[45]

theScore Bet vs other books

  • vs DraftKings 7.9/10

One comparison site puts both at −110 on main lines; Oddschecker and Covers describe theScore Bet’s live menu and market range as thinner than DraftKings’.[68][45][14]

  • vs FanDuel 8.3/10

Oddschecker calls theScore Bet’s live betting less deep than FanDuel’s. theScore Bet’s edge is the tie-in with theScore media app.[45][40]

  • vs Kalshi 8.1/10

Example prices Kalshi’s taker fee at 50¢ is about −107.25 a side before the spread, against theScore Bet’s −110. Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange, not a sportsbook: you trade contracts against other traders.[75][68][calc]
