Kalshi review

8.1out of 10

For patient limit-order traders, favorite bettors and players limited at sportsbooks, in states where its sports contracts still run. Longshot and combo takers should skip it.

Kalshi is not a sportsbook. It is a CFTC-regulated exchange (a designated contract market since November 2020) where you buy and sell $1 sports event contracts against other traders and pay a fee instead of vig.[1][44][72]

Example prices the fee peaks at 1.75¢ a contract at 50¢, so a $100 taker buy at 50¢ works out at about −107.26, and at 51¢ about −111.65. Withdrawals to a debit card are stated in hours, with no withdrawal fee listed.[43][99][33][30][calc]

The catch is legal and operational. Since August 2026 two federal appeals courts have ruled that states can enforce their gambling laws against its sports contracts (the Third Circuit ruled the other way for New Jersey in April 2026, so the question may reach the Supreme Court), court orders require Kalshi to block them in Michigan, Nevada and Washington, and outages and delays hit several big game days.[23][14][9][13][15][17][92][93][94]

Best for

  • Patient traders who rest limit orders: makers pay a smaller fee or none, depending on the market, and can trade close to the no-vig price.[44][47][48][58]
  • Favorite and near-even bettors: the fee is P × (1 − P), so it is smallest as a share of stake on favorites. Example prices: $1.72 on a $100 buy at 75¢ against $4.99 at 25¢.[43][46][calc]
  • Bettors limited at sportsbooks: no per-bet stake limit was found (position accountability levels apply), and the practical cap is how many contracts are offered at your price.[70][72][68]

Skip it if

  • You bet longshots or parlays: the fee is heaviest at low prices, and a study of 300,000+ Kalshi contracts across all categories, not sports alone, found takers lost about 32% on longshots.[65][66][46]
  • You live in Michigan, Nevada or Washington, where court orders require Kalshi to block its sports contracts, or in Massachusetts, where an injunction was reported in force in August 2026.[13][15][17][21]
  • You want a sportsbook-style cash-out button, teasers or bought points: you exit by selling into the order book, and no teaser product was found.[56][50]
  • You need a site that stays up on the biggest nights: users reported being unable to reach portfolios or close positions during an NFL game in December 2025.[93][92]

How vigged scores it

8.1/10
  • Pricing 25%7.5

A taker near 50¢ pays about −107 to −112 after the fee (example prices), a two-sided hold of about 3.5% to 4.5% on the tightest book: between the 7 (standard −110) and 8.5 (reduced juice) anchors, half a point below FanDuel’s reported −108. Favorites are cheaper and longshots and combos dearer; makers can get near the no-vig price.[43][99][65][calc]

  • Markets 15%8.5

The main US leagues with game lines, spread and total ladders, NFL player props, futures and Combos (parlays and same-game parlays), plus a Live tab and a full order book. No teasers or bought points, and in-game rules and depth are thinly documented.[6][52][51][54][100][50][49]

  • Limits 15%9.0

No published stake limit and no documented limiting of winning accounts; the cap is order-book depth and position accountability levels. A competitor’s unproven allegation that market makers pull liquidity from winners, and an affiliated market maker, keep it off the 10 anchor.[70][72][68][71][73]

  • Payouts 15%8.0

Kalshi states debit withdrawals in hours and crypto in about 30 minutes, with no withdrawal fees listed, but ACH takes a few business days, deposits can be held up to 2 days, and complaints of funds held behind repeated verification are common on Trustpilot.[33][35][34][36][40][41]

  • App & site 10%8.5

Store ratings of 4.7 to 4.8 on large counts would reach the top, but outages on big nights in October 2025, December 2025 and on Super Bowl Sunday 2026, and recent reviews mentioning crashes and wrong portfolio values, hold it at the 8.5 anchor, half a point below FanDuel and Hard Rock Bet.[84][87][92][93][94][86]

  • Promos 5%7.0

An ordinary referral offer: most qualifying users (70%) get $15 after trading $25, credits expire in 7 days and must be traded once. Interest on balances is a small extra.[74][75][78]

  • Safety & licensing 15%8.0

CFTC-regulated since 2020 with self-exclusion and deposit caps, but a mixed record: appeals losses over Nevada, the California tribes, Ohio and Tennessee, state court orders in Michigan, Nevada and Washington, misdemeanour charges in Arizona, which Kalshi contests, and a September 2026 market settled before officials ruled the game was not over.[1][81][82][14][10][13][27][95][17][15][11]

Weighted mean of seven scores, each 0–10 against the same published anchors for every book. Tap a row for the reason. How the rubric works.

Pricing: a fee on every trade

Kalshi is not a sportsbook and posts no house price. You buy a contract that pays $1 if it wins, at the ask in the order book, and Kalshi adds a fee. Your cost is the spread plus the fee.[1][44][70]

The taker fee is roundup(0.07 × contracts × price × (1 − price)), per Kalshi’s “Fee Schedule for July 2026 – 7.7.26 Update”. It peaks at 50¢: 1.75¢ a contract. Kalshi’s own example is 100 contracts at 55¢ for a $1.74 fee. Its API docs describe rounding per fill to $0.0001 with refunds of overpaid cents, which moves a $100 order by 1¢ at most.[43][44][45][46]

Example prices $100 at a 50¢ ask buys 193 contracts with $3.38 in fees: about −107.26. At 51¢ it buys 189 contracts with $3.31 in fees: about −111.65. vigged ranks Kalshi at this after-fee taker price, and only when $2,000 or more sits at the ask.[99][calc]

Example prices On a coin flip with a 1¢ spread (asks of 50¢ and 51¢), the two sides add up to a 4.50% hold, against 4.76% at −110/−110. A $100 taker buy costs $3.38 at 50¢ and $5.22 at 51¢, against $4.55 at −110: $1,692, $2,608 and $2,273 over 500 bets.[calc]

Example prices The fee is heaviest on longshots. A $100 buy at 25¢ pays $4.99 in fees, at 75¢ $1.72. A study of more than 300,000 Kalshi contracts across all categories found a favorite–longshot bias, with takers losing about 32% on longshots and makers about 10%.[65][66][calc]

Resting limit orders pay less. Sources disagree on how much: some give a maker fee of a quarter of the taker rate on listed series, others say resting orders are fee-free on most sports markets. Example prices: a resting bid filled at 50¢ with that quarter-rate fee works out at about −101.77, $0.87 per $100 at a coin flip. A fill is not certain.[47][48][44][calc]

Example prices What the price costs over 500 bets

Kalshi's typical price (−107.26)

  • −110$2,273
  • −108$1,852
  • −107.26$1,692
  • −105$1,190
  • −104$962

Expected cost of 500 bets of $100, each a true 50/50, at each price on both sides (vigged's calculator). Kalshi: −107.26, a 50¢ contract after the taker fee.[43][44][99][calc]

Markets: contracts, ladders and combos

Sports contracts went live on 2025-01-23 with championship futures and the NFC and AFC title games. NFL player props such as yards and touchdowns followed from September 2025.[6][52]

Spreads and totals are a ladder of separate yes/no contracts at half-point strikes, such as “wins by over 7.5”. Half points mean no pushes. A different number is another market with its own order book; no teaser or buy-points product was found.[100][50]

Combos are Kalshi’s parlays and same-game parlays: in beta from September 2025, open to all users from December 2025. Market makers quote one price by request for quote, the combo pays $1 a contract only if every leg wins, and an accepted quote cannot be canceled. Press reports fees on combos from 2026-08-20; the exact rate a taker pays was not confirmed.[51][53][54][55][44]

Example prices Two true coin-flip legs at −110 pay +264.46, an expected cost of $8.88 per $100. A combo quoted at 26¢ with the standard taker fee pays about +265.66 ($8.59); at 27¢, +252.35 ($11.91). A combo beats a −110 parlay only when the quote sits within about 1¢ of the no-vig price.[calc]

There is no cash-out offer. You sell contracts back into the order book at market or with a limit order, any number of them, so partial exits work. Take-profit and stop-loss levels can be set, and a resting order must be canceled (free) before you can close.[56][57][59][58]

The help center refers to a Live tab, and Kalshi signed a live-data deal with STATSCORE in September 2025; no help page on in-game rules was found. Beyond sports it lists economics, elections and politics and, since June 2026, crypto perpetual futures, and its contracts also reach Robinhood and Webull.[54][60][61][62][17]

Limits: depth, not a stake cap

No per-bet stake limit of the sportsbook kind was found. It describes itself as a peer-to-peer exchange that earns fees whatever the result. The real cap is the order book: a large order fills at worse prices as it goes through the levels.[70][72]

Position rules exist. A February 2023 CFTC filing described a $25,000 position limit; a November 2024 filing moved to position accountability levels, such as 25,000 contracts per strike per member, which trigger a review rather than a hard stop. Current figures for sports contracts were not confirmed.[67][68][69]

Depth peaks before kickoff. Blockworks Research found top-of-book depth rose about 19 times in the 48 hours before March Madness games, then fell 76% in-game. Press reports a record $14.8B month in April 2026 and a $56.3M top single-game market in NFL Week 1.[49][63][64]

In May 2026 DraftKings co-founder Matt Kalish alleged that Kalshi helps market makers spot winning users so they can stop quoting them. It is unproven: Kalshi denies limiting winners, and critics say the gap he cited is order-book depth. Kalshi’s affiliated market maker, Kalshi Trading, takes the other side of some trades, which a class action challenges.[70][71][72][73]

What to do: check the size offered at your price before a large order, and rest a limit order rather than sweep the book.[58][49]

Payouts: fast on paper, mixed in reports

Kalshi’s help center says debit card withdrawals arrive “within a few hours” (another snapshot of the page says typically about 30 minutes), ACH “within a few business days” and crypto in about 30 minutes, after a prior crypto deposit. Debit withdrawals face a personalised daily limit that rises with activity.[33][34][35]

No withdrawal fee is listed for debit card, ACH, crypto, PayPal or Venmo. Third-party guides claim $5 for a wire and $2 for Apple Pay; neither was found on Kalshi’s pages. Debit deposits may carry a 2% fee; ACH deposits are free.[30][31][32][38][39]

Card and ACH deposits can be held up to 2 days after settlement, per the newer help article. An older version of the page says 3 days for cards, about 7 days to the same bank and up to 90 days to a different bank; which applies now was not confirmed. A compliance review can add 3–5 business days.[36][37][33]

Reports are mixed. Trustpilot reviews are self-selected and skew negative; its Finnish page shows 1.9 from 163 reviews, with reports of funds held for about 5 weeks behind repeated verification. Some App Store reviewers praise fast payouts. DraftKings ads quote Kalshi withdrawal complaints, which is a competitor’s selection.[40][41][86][42]

What to do: finish verification before a big event, withdraw by the method you deposited with, and read the limit and fee in the Transfers tab before you request.[36][30][33]

App: high ratings, shaky big nights

Kalshi runs iOS and Android apps from KalshiEX LLC, plus a web version. Snapshots of the App Store listing have shown 4.7 to 4.8, from about 21K to 588K ratings across title variants; Google Play showed 4.7 from about 132K reviews and 1M+ downloads, rated 18+.[84][85][87][88][90]

Outages fall on big nights. On an October 2025 college-football Saturday the site and app were unresponsive for more than 20 minutes; Kalshi said under half of users were hit and denied an exchange outage. On 2025-12-29, during an NFL game, users could not see portfolios or close positions. On Super Bowl Sunday 2026 deposits were reportedly delayed by up to 70 minutes.[92][93][94]

Recent App Store reviews praise ease of use and payouts, and complain of crashes, wrong portfolio values, withdrawals and slow support. A weak analytics source claims an August 2026 update cut the rating to 3.0.[86][85][89]

Order tools include limit orders, auto sell, and take-profit and stop-loss levels. Notifications split into categories, with email alerts for price moves and settlements; no native price-alert feature was confirmed.[58][59][91]

Promos: a referral draw

Kalshi’s referral terms (undated): US only, full verification, and the new user must trade $25 or more within 7 days. The reward is drawn: $15 (70%), $35 (24%), $75 (5%), $100 (0.65%) or $500 (0.35%). Credits expire in 7 days and must be traded once before they can be withdrawn.[74][75]

Example: on those odds the average reward is $25.05, and seven in ten rewards are $15.[74][calc]

Affiliate sites advertise October 2026 offers of “up to $2,000” or $50 for trading $20. They conflict with Kalshi’s own terms and are weak sources.[76][77]

Kalshi pays variable interest on cash and open positions, accrued daily and paid monthly. Its help pages give 3.25% (US, balances of $250+) and 4.05% in another version.[78][79]

Safety and licensing: federal approval, state fights

KalshiEX LLC is a CFTC-designated contract market, approved in November 2020. It is private and venture-backed: about $1bn raised at a $22bn valuation in 2026, with talks at $40bn reported on 2026-09-30.[1][5][3][4]

Kalshi markets sports trading as legal in all 50 states; the courts are split. The Third Circuit sided with Kalshi against New Jersey on 2026-04-06, and New Jersey’s Supreme Court petition (No. 26-299) was docketed 2026-09-08. The Ninth Circuit ruled for Nevada (2026-08-28) and California tribes (2026-09-16), and the Sixth Circuit for Ohio and Tennessee (2026-09-25).[7][23][24][14][11][9][10]

State orders now block sports contracts in Michigan (preliminary injunction 2026-09-01, up to $500,000 a day), Nevada (geofence due 2026-08-12 or $120,000 a day; Nevada says its testers still got through) and Washington (August 2026, also covering elections and entertainment). Massachusetts’ January 2026 injunction was reported in force in August 2026, though Law360 reported a stay.[13][15][16][17][21][22][20]

New York’s attorney general sued on 2026-07-31, and the CFTC used emergency authority on 2026-08-11 to keep Kalshi operating. Arizona filed 20 criminal misdemeanour counts in March 2026 (their current status was not confirmed), and Ohio’s regulator proposed a $5 million fine, which Kalshi is contesting. Maryland agreed in August 2025 not to enforce until the Fourth Circuit rules; that appeal was argued 2026-05-07. Private class actions alleging illegal gambling have been filed in several states; none has a certified class and none is proven.[18][19][27][28][29][25][26][97]

Settlement is not flawless. On 2026-09-05 Kalshi settled the Western Michigan–Michigan market, about $18.6M traded, before the game was final and paid out on the wrong result, then clawed those payouts back and paid Michigan holders; the game’s result was later disputed by the conferences. A market on Iran’s leader was settled under a death carve-out and drew a class action. On market integrity, Kalshi banned George Santos for life with a $71,356 fine, alongside a CFTC settlement in July 2026.[95][96][98]

Responsible-trading tools include self-exclusion (it does not cover access through a broker such as Robinhood), monthly funding caps and trading breaks; no reality-check tool was found. Support is chat and email, no phone. Kalshi accepts users from 18; vigged.com is for readers 21+.[81][82][83][80][8]

How it compares

Kalshi is an exchange, not a sportsbook: no house sets the price, and you pay a fee instead of vig. Against a sportsbook’s −110 it is cheaper at the ask on the right side of a 1¢ spread and dearer on the wrong one.[1][44]

Example prices Taking −110 instead of Kalshi’s 50¢ after-fee −107 costs $1.27 a bet, $637.21 over 500. If your side is at 51¢ (about −112), Kalshi is the worse number by $0.81 a bet, $405.84 over 500.[calc]

Example prices Polymarket US’s fee formula gives almost the same after-fee price at 50¢: about −107.19 against Kalshi’s −107.26. At that price the fee alone barely separates them.[99][calc]

What to do: compare Kalshi’s after-fee price with your sportsbooks’ on the same side, and take whichever is better. Same bet. Better number.[99]

Pros

  • CFTC-regulated exchange: you trade against other traders, with no house taking the other side of the price.[1][72]
  • Example prices: about −107.26 after the fee at 50¢, better than a standard −110.[99][calc]
  • No per-bet stake limit found and no documented limiting of winning accounts (a competitor’s allegation is unproven).[70][72]
  • Debit withdrawals stated in hours, crypto in about 30 minutes, with no withdrawal fees listed.[33][35][30]
  • Exit any time by selling into the order book, in part or in full; canceling a resting order is free.[56][57]
  • Store ratings of 4.7 to 4.8 on large counts.[84][87]

Cons

  • Sports contracts must be blocked under court orders in Michigan, Nevada and Washington, with appeals losses in the Ninth and Sixth Circuits.[13][15][17][14][10]
  • Example prices: at 51¢ a taker pays about −111.65, worse than −110; the fee is heaviest on longshots.[99][46][calc]
  • Outages on big game nights in October 2025, December 2025 and on Super Bowl Sunday 2026.[92][93][94]
  • Withdrawal complaints about repeated verification, and deposit holds of up to 2 days.[40][36]
  • A September 2026 college-football market settled before officials ruled the game was not over; Kalshi reversed it and paid the side that won the official result.[95]
  • No teasers, bought points or sportsbook-style cash out; 18+ where state sportsbooks require 21.[50][8][18]

Kalshi vs other books

  • vs DraftKings 7.9/10

Example prices a 50¢ ask on Kalshi works out at about −107.26 after the fee, against a standard −110. Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange, not a sportsbook: you trade contracts against other traders.[99][calc]

  • vs Polymarket US 7.4/10

Example prices at 50¢ Polymarket US’s fee works out at about −107.19 and Kalshi’s at −107.26. Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange, and court orders require it to block sports contracts in Michigan, Nevada and Washington.[99][13][15][17][calc]

Kalshi: common questions

Is Kalshi legit?

Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange (a designated contract market) approved in November 2020. Several states dispute its sports contracts in court, and in September 2026 it settled one college-football market before officials ruled the game was not over, paid the side that lost the official result, then reversed it and credited affected accounts.

Is Kalshi legal in my state?

Kalshi says all 50 states. As of early October 2026, court orders require Kalshi to block its sports contracts in Michigan, Nevada and Washington and on the lands of the suing California tribes; Massachusetts was reported blocked; Ohio and Tennessee are contested after a 2026-09-25 appeals ruling. In Michigan its non-sports markets stay open; Washington’s order also covers elections, politics and entertainment. Check the in-app notice where you are, and your state regulator’s announcements.

How long do Kalshi withdrawals take?

Kalshi states debit card withdrawals within a few hours (another version of the page says about 30 minutes), ACH within a few business days and crypto in about 30 minutes. Deposits can be held up to 2 days, and a compliance review can add 3–5 business days.

What are Kalshi’s fees?

A taker pays roundup(0.07 × contracts × price × (1 − price)), at most 1.75 cents a contract at 50 cents. Example prices: a $100 buy at 50 cents pays $3.38 in fees, about −107.26. Resting orders pay less or nothing, depending on the market.

Does Kalshi limit winners?

No published stake limit and no documented limiting of winning accounts were found; the cap is order-book depth. A DraftKings co-founder alleged in May 2026 that market makers can stop quoting winning users; Kalshi denies limiting winners and the claim is unproven.

Is Kalshi a sportsbook?

Kalshi is an exchange. You buy and sell event contracts that pay $1 if they win, against other traders, on a CFTC-regulated market, and pay a fee on each trade instead of vig.

How old do you have to be to use Kalshi?

Kalshi accepts users from 18. New York’s attorney general has challenged that where state law requires 21. vigged.com is for readers 21+.

Kalshi app review: is the app any good?

Store snapshots show 4.8 on iOS and 4.7 on Google Play from large counts. Outages hit big game nights in October 2025, December 2025 and on Super Bowl Sunday 2026, and recent reviews mention crashes and withdrawal problems.
