Asian handicap explained: quarter lines worked through
The Asian handicap is soccer’s point spread. It gives one team a head start of whole, half or quarter goals so the draw disappears and a match becomes a two-way bet. Quarter lines look strange at first; worked through, they are just two half-bets.
The three kinds of line
- Half-goal lines (−0.5, +1.5 …) always produce a winner. −0.5 wins if the team wins; −1.5 wins if they win by two or more.
- Whole-goal lines (0, −1, +2 …) push when the handicapped score is level. 0 refunds on a draw; −1 refunds on a one-goal win.
- Quarter-goal lines (−0.25, −0.75, +1.25 …) split the stake in two equal halves on the lines either side: −0.25 is half on 0 and half on −0.5; −0.75 is half on −0.5 and half on −1.
Add the handicap to the team’s goals, then compare. Team A −1 winning 2–1 becomes 1–1: a push. Team B +0.5 in a 0–0 draw becomes 0.5–0: a win.
Worked examples: $100 at 1.95 (−105)
Every example below is a $100 stake at decimal 1.95, about −105 in American odds. A full win returns $195 (profit $95). Half a stake at 1.95 is $50 returning $97.50 (profit $47.50).
| Result | How it settles | Profit / loss |
|---|---|---|
| Team A wins | Both halves win | +$95.00 |
| Draw | $50 on 0 refunded, $50 on −0.5 lost | −$50.00 |
| Team A loses | Both halves lose | −$100.00 |
| Result | How it settles | Profit / loss |
|---|---|---|
| Team A wins by 2+ | Both halves win | +$95.00 |
| Team A wins by 1 | $50 on −0.5 wins $47.50, $50 on −1 refunded | +$47.50 |
| Draw or Team A loses | Both halves lose | −$100.00 |
| Result | How it settles | Profit / loss |
|---|---|---|
| Team B wins | Both halves win | +$95.00 |
| Draw | $50 on 0 refunded, $50 on +0.5 wins $47.50 | +$47.50 |
| Team B loses | Both halves lose | −$100.00 |
| Result | How it settles | Profit / loss |
|---|---|---|
| Team B wins or draws | Both halves win | +$95.00 |
| Team B loses by 1 | $50 on +0.5 lost, $50 on +1 refunded | −$50.00 |
| Team B loses by 2+ | Both halves lose | −$100.00 |
Whole and half lines for comparison
- Team A 0 (draw no bet): win +$95, draw $0 (refund), loss −$100.
- Team A −0.5: win +$95, draw or loss −$100.
- Team A −1: win by 2+ +$95, win by 1 $0 (refund), draw or loss −$100.
- Team A −1.5: win by 2+ +$95, anything else −$100.
Read down the list and each quarter line sits between its neighbors: −0.25 is between 0 and −0.5, −0.75 between −0.5 and −1. That is why it is priced between them.
Quarter goal totals work the same way
Totals like 2.25 and 2.75 also split the stake. $100 at 1.90 (about −111):
- Over 2.25 (half on 2, half on 2.5): three or more goals +$90; exactly two goals −$50 (half refunded, half lost); one or none −$100.
- Over 2.75 (half on 2.5, half on 3): four or more goals +$90; exactly three goals +$45 (half wins $45, half refunded); two or fewer −$100.
- Under 2.25 (half on 2, half on 2.5): one or none +$90; exactly two goals +$45 (half refunded, half wins $45); three or more −$100.
Comparing handicap prices
Only compare prices on the same line: −0.25 at 1.95 and −0.5 at 2.05 are different bets. On vigged’s soccer boards the spread column is the Asian handicap; when books hang different lines, compare each price with the no-vig price for its own line — see no-vig odds and line shopping.
Frequently asked questions
What is an Asian handicap?
A soccer handicap in half or quarter goals that removes the draw, leaving two sides. The favorite gives a head start (−0.5, −1, −0.25 …) and the underdog receives it. It is the soccer version of a point spread.
What does −0.25 mean in Asian handicap?
Half the stake goes on 0 (draw no bet) and half on −0.5. If the team wins, both halves win. If the match is drawn, the 0 half is refunded and the −0.5 half loses, so you lose half the stake. If the team loses, the whole stake loses.
What does −0.75 mean in Asian handicap?
Half the stake goes on −0.5 and half on −1. A win by two or more wins both halves. A win by exactly one goal wins the −0.5 half and refunds the −1 half. A draw or a loss loses everything.
Can an Asian handicap bet push?
Whole-goal lines (0, −1, +2 …) push when the handicapped score is level, and the stake is refunded. Half-goal lines never push. Quarter-goal lines can be half refunded.
Is −0.5 Asian handicap the same as the moneyline?
It settles the same way as backing the team on the three-way moneyline: a win wins, a draw or loss loses. The price can differ slightly between the two markets at a book.
