Line shopping in sports betting: why the best price matters
The same bet costs different amounts at different books. Taking the best available number — line shopping — is the simplest edge in sports betting. It needs no model and no opinion, just a comparison.
Why prices differ
Books set and move their own numbers. Some follow sharp market makers within seconds; others move later, shade popular teams or price to their own customers. At any moment the same side can be −3 (−110) at one book, −2.5 (−120) at another and −3 (−102) at a third.
What a few cents are worth
| Price | Break-even win rate | EV at a 52.5% win rate |
|---|---|---|
| −120 | 54.55% | −3.75% |
| −110 | 52.38% | +0.23% |
| −105 | 51.22% | +2.50% |
| +100 | 50.00% | +5.00% |
Same picks, same win rate — the only difference is where the bet was placed.
In dollars: the gap between two prices is paid only on the bets that win, so it costs the win probability times the payout gap. −115 against −105 on $100 is about $4.24 a bet, around $2,120 over 500 bets. Put your own numbers, or a live gap from the board, into the worst line vs best line calculator.
Half a point
On spreads and totals the line itself can differ. How much half a point is worth depends on how often the game lands on that number. In the NFL, a spread moving through 3 changes the result of a large share of games; moving from 5.5 to 5 changes very few. Compare the whole package — line and price — rather than the price alone. The half point calculator prices it: −3 at −110 against −2.5 at −125, or any two numbers.
Line shopping on vigged
Every board shows US sportsbooks side by side and highlights BEST: the best value on your side, sometimes on a better number, with a no-vig price next to it so you can see how good it really is. Before a game, BEST is the best value on each side among the lines books post, sometimes on a better number. Usually that is the best price on the main line. A nearby number takes its place when a book offers a better number at a price no worse, or, in football, basketball, NHL totals, MLB and the big five soccer leagues, when our key-number model (pushes included) rates it worth more in every variation of the model. During live games BEST is the best price on the main line. Turn on My Books in settings and BEST counts only the books you use. When BEST beats the no-vig price on its number, by the most cautious of three ways to remove the vig, it shows up as +EV. Prefer the old view? The setting "BEST shows: best price on the main line" keeps it.

Frequently asked questions
What is line shopping?
Line shopping is checking several sportsbooks before betting and taking the best available line and price for the side you want. Books often disagree by half a point or several cents, and the better number costs you nothing extra.
How much does line shopping save?
A lot over time. Betting at −105 instead of −110 lowers the win rate needed to break even from 52.38% to 51.22%. For a bettor who wins 52.5% of spread bets, that turns an expected return of about +0.2% into about +2.5%.
Is it legal to have accounts at several sportsbooks?
Yes, in states where online sports betting is legal you may hold accounts at any licensed books available there. Which books you can use depends on your state.
Is half a point worth more on some numbers?
Yes. In the NFL, moving through 3 or 7 (for example from −3.5 to −2.5) is worth much more than moving between less common margins, because so many games end on those numbers.
