Sportsbooks vs prediction markets

Sportsbooks are licensed state by state, so an app works only where it holds a license and only while you are inside that state. Kalshi and Polymarket US are federally regulated exchanges whose sports contracts reach states without sportsbooks, but several states are challenging them in court. What is the difference between a sportsbook and a prediction market?

A sportsbook is licensed by each state and sets its own prices with a margin (the vig). A prediction market such as Kalshi or Polymarket US is a federally regulated exchange where traders buy and sell contracts that pay $1 if an outcome happens; it charges fees instead of vig, and its sports contracts are being challenged by several states.

Does vigged know which books I can use?

Set your state on any board and vigged ranks only the books licensed there for best price, +EV and arbitrage, plus Kalshi as a book (on by default) where it is allowed and has $2,000 at its price; the others stay visible, unranked. Polymarket US is listed as eligible in 42 jurisdictions; every status here is a summary as of October 3, 2026, not legal advice.
